Shoshone Storytelling Experience
Stories passed through generations. A culture that lives on.
MEET YOUR DISCERA INSIDER
DARREN PARRY
Darren Parry is the former Chairman of the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation, an author, educator, and leading voice on Native American history and Indigenous land stewardship. He is the author of The Bear River Massacre: A Shoshone History and Tending the Sacred: How Indigenous Wisdom Will Save the World. Parry teaches Environmental Humanities at the University of Utah and Utah State University, and lectures nationally and internationally on Indigenous perspectives on sustainability, climate resilience, and land stewardship.
This isn’t history observed from a distance. It’s a story shared person to person.
THE DISCERA DEPOT
Your private home base for Utah Origins.
Every Utah Origins journey begins at The Discera Depot, located inside the historic Corinne Train Station at This Is The Place Heritage Park.
Meet your Discera host, enjoy refreshments and settle into the story before your experience begins. Throughout your visit, your host remains close at hand—coordinating introductions, timing, transportation and whatever else the day may bring.
Return to the Depot between experiences for a cold drink, a locally inspired treat or simply a comfortable place to pause.
No ticket windows. No figuring out where to go next. No watching the clock.
Just arrive. We’ll take it from there.
Your Shoshone Storytelling Experience
Some stories aren't found in history books. They're passed from one generation to the next, keeping alive the wisdom, traditions and experiences of a people whose connection to this land stretches back centuries.
Guided by a Shoshone cultural leader and storyteller, this private experience invites you into a deeply personal conversation about the people, history and living culture of the Shoshone Nation.
Through storytelling, cultural artifacts and meaningful exchange, discover Utah through a perspective that reaches far beyond the familiar historical narrative.
This isn't history observed from a distance. It's a story shared person to person.
01 — WE COME TO YOU
Your Discera host welcomes you and coordinates private transportation to your storytelling experience.
From the moment you arrive, every detail is thoughtfully arranged so you can focus on the people you'll meet and the stories you're about to discover.
→
02 — MEET YOUR SHOSHONE STORYTELLER
Your experience begins with a personal introduction to a Shoshone cultural leader whose connection to these stories is rooted in family, community and lived experience.
Learn about the Shoshone people, their enduring relationship with the land and the traditions that continue to connect generations.
This is more than an introduction to history. It's an opportunity to hear the story from someone who carries it forward.
→
03 — THE STORIES OF THE LAND
Long before Utah became a state, Shoshone communities lived, traveled and built their lives across this landscape.
Through personal accounts, oral traditions and historical perspectives, your storyteller shares the experiences of the Shoshone people—from their deep connection to the natural world to the challenges, resilience and defining moments that shaped their history.
Discover a side of Utah that cannot be understood through monuments and historical markers alone.
→
04 — OBJECTS THAT TELL STORIES
History becomes tangible as your storyteller introduces a collection of cultural artifacts, traditional clothing, beadwork, tools and other objects connected to Shoshone heritage.
Each piece opens a window into the artistry, ingenuity and traditions of the people who created and used them.
More than objects from the past, they become starting points for stories about family, identity, craftsmanship and the preservation of culture.
→
05 — THE CONVERSATION CONTINUES
Some of the most meaningful moments happen when the storytelling becomes a conversation.
Spend time with your Shoshone Insider asking questions, exploring different perspectives and discovering how traditions are preserved, adapted and carried forward today.
This is an opportunity for genuine human connection—an exchange that goes beyond what a conventional tour can offer.
→
06 — RETURN
Your Discera host coordinates your return transportation or transition to your next Discera experience.
You leave with more than a new understanding of Utah's past. You carry a personal connection to the Shoshone people, their living culture and the stories that continue to shape this place.
The experience ends. The stories stay with you.
A Note About the Experience
Shoshone storytelling is a living cultural tradition, not a scripted historical performance. Each experience is guided by the knowledge, personal perspective and cultural protocols of the Shoshone leader hosting your group.
Stories, artifacts and opportunities for conversation may vary depending on the storyteller and the traditions they choose to share. Some knowledge and cultural practices are not intended for public sharing, and Discera honors those boundaries.
Our intention is to create a respectful setting for meaningful cultural exchange—one that celebrates the Shoshone people not only through their history, but through their voices and living traditions today.
